According to Greek myth, Paris of Troy seduced Helen of Sparta away from her husband Menelaus, king of Sparta. In response to this insult, Menelaus (with the aid of his brother Agamemnon, king of Mycenae) gathered all of the armies of Greece (collectively called "Achaeans") and set sale with 1,000 ships from the Port of Aulis to besiege Troy for what would end up becoming a decade-long campaign.
