The Unveiling
2012
oil on panel
18"x24"
After several destructive fires, the interior of the San Giovanni in Laterano was rebuilt by the architect Francesco Borromini in 1650. The nave of the basilica sets the scene for this painting and depicts an exuberant Borromini unveiling his work to his benefactor, Pope Innocent X. Interestingly, the artist Diego Velazquez's famous portrait of Pope Innocent X is believed to have been completed the same year, which Innocent declared a "Jubilee Year".

This piece comes framed in a gilded, baroque style, museum quality frame.
